Counselling is one of the most rewarding helping professions on earth, but it can also be confusing to those unfamiliar with its many facets. Counselling is not a quick fix, but rather a journey that takes consistent work by both the client and counsellor/therapist in order to achieve successful outcomes. Each person’s story is unique, and while there are guiding theories to support the process, each counselor must tailor this journey to fit their client.
In the first session, it is common for counsellors to ask clients open questions about their reasons for seeking counselling. This is to establish an understanding of the situation, behavioural patterns and the way that their thought processes are working. During this time, it is important that the counsellor/therapist creates a safe space for their client where they can feel comfortable talking about what they are struggling with.
After the initial meeting, a good counsellor will be able to help their client develop goals that are achievable within the context of the current situation. The goals may be focused on behaviour change, or the counsellor/therapist may focus on the client’s strengths and encourage them to engage their self-actualising tendency.
In the last stage, it is important that the counsellor/therapist is able to help their client to understand and regulate their emotions. This can be achieved through increased awareness of triggers, understanding maladaptive coping and identifying positive ways to express emotions.
