Fenben lab fenbendazol is an antiparasitic agent that is a member of the benzimidazole family. It has been found to have antitumor activity in animal experiments [1]. It binds to tubulin and inhibits the polymerization of microtubules that make up the cytoskeleton, a structure that provides shape and organization to cells. This action is similar to the mechanism of cytotoxic anticancer agents such as vinca alkaloids (vinblastine, vinorelbine, vindexantine) and taxanes (paclitaxel and docetaxel).
Fenbendazole is an inexpensive drug with a good safety record. It is commonly prescribed as an anthelmintic for the treatment of many intestinal parasites, including pinworms, giardia, roundworms, hookworms and Taenia solium in dogs, cats, rabbits and other animals. It is also used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of pulmonary helminths such as lungworms and whipworms in horses and other ruminants.
It has been shown to be absorbed by pigs, a species with sensitive stomachs. The pharmacokinetics of fenbendazole in pigs have been studied and it has been found to be well tolerated at doses up to 10 mg/kg/day.
This medication should be given at regular intervals. It is available as granules or as liquid suspension to be given orally. When given at a dose higher than that recommended by your veterinarian, this drug may cause adverse reactions such as facial swelling, itching and hives in cats and dogs. If these occur, contact your veterinarian immediately.
